And….ACTION!

TODAY’S a big day in the comic ‘biz’, as DC Comics takes the bold step of relaunching it’s entire line with fresh issue 1′s of Action Comics, Detective Comics, Green Arrow and more hitting comic book stores today, following in the wake of last week’s successful relaunch for the Justice League book.

Exciting stuff, some might say, and the large pre-orders being taken for these titles certainly seem to suggest DC Comics’ plan may pay off.

But HEY! Let us not forget our own homegrown titles, for today is also Dandy day, which would explain why I’ve drawn the Dandy/Action Comics mash-up above! Hooray!

Yes, Britain’s oldest comic – having been knocking around since 1937 – is still being published today, and is brighter and funner (yes, I said funner) than ever!

You’ll find old favourites being drawn by the crop of today’s cartoonists; with jovial Jamie Smart working on the comic’s iconic Desperate Dan, wallopin’ Wayne Thompson bringing all-new adventures for Bananaman,  and ferocious Phil Corbett drawing Korky the Cat. As well as all that, you’ll find new characters like TV’s Harry Hill, in his own superb strip by knockout Nigel Parkinson, Postman Prat by legendary Lew Stringer, Mr Meecher by wondrous Wilbur Dawbarn, Yore! by the effortless Etherington Brothers, Tiny’s Temper by saucy Stu Munro, and Clown Wars by no-holds-barred Nik Holmes.

Oh, and I’ve got a three-panel strip about a squirrel. Hooray!

All of that – and more – will set you back a mere £1.50 a week, so when you dash to the comic shop to pick up the all-new Batman, why not stop off at your local newsagent too, and pick up a copy of The Dandy for you and/or your child/nephew/young cousin, and support some home-made cartoonery as well! It needn’t be just the superheroes that get to soar, no sir!

Remember: DC 52Dandy Comic, 52 weeks a year. Give or take one or two issues around Christmas. POW!

You’ll also find The Dandy on Facebook and Twitter. How very modern!

    • Thanks, Wayne!

Also, I had no idea you had a Flickr account – I’ve updated the post to include a link to it. Hooray!

  • That is brilliant! Made me chuckle and I love your style.

    • Thank you, Phil! Glad you liked it, mister!

  • That cover is fantastic! Would loved to have see it as front cover of an issue of the dandy :)

    • So would I, but don’t think it’d ever happen. Although Harry Hill is in there, so you never know :D

  • Although it would have been nice to see this on the front of the Dandy right on DC reboot day, I’m afraid the Dandy’s already done more or less exactly the same thing… three months ago, on the cover of issue #3538! (Drawn by Wayne Thompson, too.)

    • Oh yes, so he did! Ah well, it’s not like Action Comics parodies are a new thing, and I just wanted to have my go!

So, what do you think?
