IT’S WEDNESDAY, and thus the latest issue of The Dandy is out, which is normally a cause for celebration at the thought of all the comic goodness within, but this week’s is tinged with sadness for me, as it’s the penultimate issue and one which brings to the end a few of my strips.
Yes, behind the lovely, classic Charles Grigg cover (taken from, the 1987 Dandy annual, fact fans!) lurks the last instalment of Secret Agent Sir, Constable Clod (He’s A Little Bit Odd), Teacher Training and most notably (to me, at least) George vs Dragon.
George vs Dragon, as regular readers will recall, was my first ever Dandy strip , and indeed my first professional cartooning gig, beginning a two years-and-a-bit stint on the comic, during which I was lucky enough not to miss an issue! So, naturally, those two crazy characters have come to mean quite a bit to me, and I’m sad to see them running off into the sunset for good in the latest issue. It’s been a blast drawing them, and I’ve been thrilled by the reader response to them as well. Good night, bad knight!
Here’s the opening panel of their first ever appearance as a little tribute. My, George’s nose was tiny back then! How its grown!
Anyway, while this issue brings to the close some strips, it also reintroduces Bad Grandad, who returns in the first of two two-page stories running in these last two issues (including an appearance from a classic Dandy character!) HURRAH! And as well as all that there’s all the usual brilliance from the likes of Jamie Smart, Stu Munro, Alex Matthews, Wayne Thompson and Nigel Auchterlounie, to name a few! DOUBLE HURRAH!
So make sure to pick up the second-to-last issue NOW, from all good newsagents and supermarkets for only £1.99! Let’s enjoy it while its still here!
My new comic strip, Secret Agent Sir, has successfully infiltrated The Dandy comic, beginning in this week’s issue (number 3605). To investigate further, all agents will need to travel to their local newsagent and pick up a copy for £1.99 and then all will be revealed.
This post will self-destruct.
